Shanley Farms CaturraCaturra - Washed
This sweet and chocolatey Caturra holds the distinction of being cultivated at the northernmost coffee farm in California. Shanley Farms is located near Morro Bay, a coastal town in San Luis Obispo County, with sweeping views of the megalithic Morro Rock that gave the city its name.
The coffee is planted on a south-facing slope, naturally shaded by the farm’s renowned avocado trees, which produce some of the most prized Hass in California. That richness carries over into the cup—this lot has a particularly luscious character, with a thick body that brings to mind European drinking chocolate.
Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety, first discovered in Brazil in the early 20th century. Today it is planted widely throughout Central and South America, and is one of the defining varietals of the region. Caturra thrives in California, and especially at this farm, where it benefits from the rich soil, coastal climate, and unique high-latitude position at a full 11.9° above the traditional coffee belt.
